What is KAS Exam?
Kerala Administrative Service Examination. This is conducted by Kerala Public Service Commission. The examination is a State Level test similar to the IAS (Indian Administrative Services) Exams. The IAS exams are conducted by Union Public Service Commission on a pan-India basis.
Those who become graduates will be posted at state-level Junior positions. They will be eligible to move up to the IAS level in 8 years of graduation. The postings will be based on ranks obtained by the graduates.
Eligibility for Kerala Administrative Service Exam (KAS Exam)
The examination has three sections or streams we can say:
- Section / Stream 1 – Direct Appointment
- Section / Stream 2 – Direct selection from full members and or approved probationers of government departments
- And Section / Stream 3 – Direct selection from 1st Gazette holders
Age:
- Section / Stream 1 – 21 to 32 Years.
- Section / Stream 2 – 21 to 40 Years.
- And Section / Stream 3 – Below 50 as of 1st January.
Education:
- Section / Stream 1 – Graduate in any subject from a UGC approved university. Profession course also included.
- Section / Stream 2 – Graduate in any subject from a UGC approved university. Profession course also included. Membership as a 1st Gazetted Officer or as an approved probationer in any Government Department as mentioed in Schedule-I of KAS Rule 2018.
- Section / Stream 3 – Graduate in any subject from a UGC approved university. Profession course also included. Also, must have a Satisfactory completion certificated from any Cadre in Government. There is recommendation of the departments such as:

- Unlimited: For Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates
- Other Backward Casts will get 7 chances
- General Category will have only 5 attempts
Syllabus of KAS Exam
The Kerala Administrative Service exams are having the same characteristics as the Union Public Service Commission conducted IAS exams. The difference is that there will be more important Kerala-related topics.
Preliminary KAS Exam:
Topic:
Paper 1- General Studies – Mark 100 – Time of Exam – 90 Minutes – 100 Questions
Paper 2 – General Studies – Mark 50, Paper 2 – Part 2 – Language Proficiency in Malayalam, Kannada or Tamil – 30 Marks, English Language Proficiency: 20 Marks – Altogether 90 Minutes Exam time.
Main KAS Exam:
The Kerala Administrative Service min exam is of 2 hours each. This has three topics as Paper 1, Paper 2 & Paper 3. All of them got a maximum mark of 100 each. The quest is in English. The candidate has the option to write in English Or in Malayalam.
KAS Interview:
There will be a face-to-face interview to finalize the best candidates. This has 50 marks. The winners will undergo a probation period of 2 years. During this time, they need to pass the Revenue Test, The Criminal Judicial Test, Account Test, and Survey Test.
